Halloween Show Pony Club is the foundation of excellent horseback riding and learning to ride correctly thorough a step by step system.  Excell Equestrian’s Pony Club Riding Center instructors teach the essential basics of riding and horsemanship in a consistent manner.

Horsemanship is both a physical and mental language, and everyone learns in a different way, so a variety of methods are utilized to develop the communication from trainer to student and then from student to horse.

Whether it’s a child starting out or an Advanced level competitor, Excell Equestrian’s Pony Club Riding Center offers high quality horseback riding lessons with talented and knowledgeable trainers.  Lessons include riders of the same skill level – the whole family is invited to watch and enjoy the atmosphere. Our supportive environment emphasizes sportsmanship and fun. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to call us at 949.228.2827

Pony Club Rating/Certification Information

Ratings are the levels of progression through the Pony Club. Riders do not need permission of the Riding Center Administrator to test, but it is wise to ask the instructor if a rider is ready to test. Each Riding Center is required to hold at least two ratings, now called certifications, per year.

Who can test?: Any USPC Member.
How do I request a test?: Just fill in a Certification Request form, found online, and make sure you come to the “prep” session before the test.
When is the testing?: Check the calendar for the next scheduled testing.
Cost: Cost is $50 for the test, and $75 for use of an Excell Equestrian horse.
Attire: Informal attire; team polo, boots, chaps, breeches, belt, helmet, and rib‐protector for cross country. You will also need your Medical Armband and Pony Club pin. Appropriate required materials such as stall cards, grooming equipment, horse record, etc. Check the test flow chart. Allow 1 1⁄2 hour for the D‐1 Test, and 2 1⁄2 hours for the D‐2+ Tests.
How do I study for a test?: You will study the flow chart (that’s like a study guide) and you can attend an Excell Equestrian prep class or prep camp. The prep classes and camps are great for giving the rider added confidence for their testing.
Prep Classes are one hour and cover the test at a sit-down meeting with a staff member or an upper level PC member, identifying any areas where a rider may need to study, as well as helping with any components where a rider needs help. This is not a lesson or a clinic, the rider must have a working knowledge of the material in advance.
Prep Camp is a full day camp where the rider actually runs through the test with instructors and pony club members and can work on and any skills they may lack.
What if I do not pass?: Every effort will be made to help a rider pass their test, however if the rider is obviously not prepared or ready for parts of the test, the examiner may choose to stop the test to be taken at a later time in its entirety, or note portions of the test the rider may retake within 30 days in order to pass the test.
Which parts of the test do I need to take?: The D‐1 test is one part, and covers the basics of beginning horsemanship. After that, a rider may choose to take all three sections; Horse Management, Flat Riding and Over Fences including cross-country (this is the Classic track), or to take an alternate track and concentrate on Dressage or Hunt Seat Equitation/Show Jumping or Western Riding. All riders must pass the Horse Management (HM) part of the level. Then they may decide to take an alternate track. If a rider chooses to take the Alternate tracks, the Standards of Proficiency are slightly different from that of the Classic track.
Standards of Proficiency and Flow Charts can be found HERE
